DNA, genealogy help solve 1968 Rapid City rape, murder

In 1968, 60-year-old Gwen Miller was raped and strangled to death at her Rapid City home. Law enforcement conducted a thorough investigation at the time, dialed in on a suspect, but ultimately didn't have enough evidence to press charges. The case went cold.

Arrested 90 people on 280 charges

Federal authorities teaming with police in the Richmond and Tri-Cities region arrested 90 people on 280 charges during a weeklong enforcement operation that targeted gang members, violent offenders and fugitives, the U.S. Marshals Service announced Thursday. ā€œThe goal was to take off the streets any gang member or suspected gang member that was wanted for anything,ā€ said Kevin Connolly, a supervisory inspector with the U.S. Marshals Service and leader of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force.

Officials from the Maryland Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force focused on individuals who possessed, manufactured or distributed child pornography, or engaged in online enticement of children for sexual purposes, according to a Maryland State Police news release. They also investigated child prostitution and human trafficking, the release stated. Most of the Maryland arrests were made in relation to child pornography, said state police spokesperson Brenda Carl.

Police arrested 18-year-old Daniel Solorio

David Corona, 27, was shot and killed near Church and Taylor avenues in Southeast Fresno. Fresno Police detectives say there was a possible argument at a nearby convenience store and Corona was followed by the suspects as he drove away. One suspect then opened fire, killing Corona. Fresno Police arrested 18-year-old Daniel Solorio and 24-year-old Jairo Madrigal, both of Lemoore. Investigators say the murder was gang-related. source

Cold case murders

Raymond Vannieuwenhoven has been jailed in lieu of bond after being charged with fatally shooting David Schuldes, 25, and Ellen Matheys, 24, in a park 80 miles north of Green Bay on July 9, 1976. He has also been charged with raping Matheys.

Man wanted in connection with death of woman found in dumpster on Detroit's east side

Detroit police Chief James Craig confirmed James Quill Cockerham was arrested Saturday afternoon in connection to the case. He referred to Cockerham as "a career criminal." "That violent, predatory, cowardly suspect is now in custody," Craig said. Investigators said the woman was seen with Cockerham inside the elevator of a nearby building.
